Objective: To perform a standard prayer ritual for Mother Kali during Amavasya.
Prerequisites/Requirements: A picture or murti of Mother Kali, three incense sticks (Dhoopam), a clay lamp with oil/wick or camphor (Deepam), fresh flowers or petals (Pushpam), a bowl of sweet food or fruits (Naivedyam).
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Stand or sit at your prayer place in front of a picture or murti of Mother Kali.
- Perform the welcome chant: “Om swagatam su swagatam – Om Kali mata-yai namah avaaha-yamee stapa-yamee.”
- Light three incense sticks and offer them by moving them seven times clockwise around the picture/murti while chanting “Om tato dhoopam aghraa-payaami – Om Kali mata-yai namah.”
- Light the clay lamp and offer it seven times clockwise around the picture/murti while chanting “Om prat-yaksha deepam darshayaami – Om Kali mata-yai namah.”
- Offer the flower or petals by moving them seven times clockwise around the picture/murti while chanting “Om idam pushpam – Om Kali mata-yai namah.”
- Place the bowl of sweet food or fruits in front of the picture/murti while chanting “Om naivedyam samar-payaami – Om Kali mata-yai namah.”
- Chant the powerful Devi mantra (“Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Viche Namah”) 11, 21, or 108 times.
- Recite prayers for forgiveness: “Om yaani kaani cha paapaani janmaantara kritaanee cha, taani sarvaani vinashyanti pradakshinaa pade pade//”.
- Offer personal prayers.
